The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east).
The population of the city was 83,652 at the 2001 Census, while the Derry Urban Area had a population of 90,736.
In October of the same year as its launch, the paper's publication days were changed to Tuesday and Friday, and 1877 it became a daily paper for a brief time, however, this lasted just three months and the paper became a tri-weekly publication after three months (Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
In its early days, the paper's editorial policy was that of the Protestant community who would become known as 'Unionists' in the following decades.
The district administered by Derry City and Strabane District Council contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
